FAQ

Below is a list of frequently asked questions with respect to the Township’s Large Item Collection Program.

What is Large Item Collection?

The Township of Laurentian Valley provides residential properties with curbside collection of large household items that would typically not fit in a garbage bag.

  • Small items (items smaller than 9” x 14” x 22”) or items that can fit into a standard garbage bag or can will not be collected and should be placed out for regular garbage collection.
  • Material placed out in cardboard boxes or garbage bags or containers will not be collected for Large Item Collection.

Please refer to your collection schedule for a complete list of acceptable items. Collection Schedules are available online as well as at the Township Office.

When does the Large Item Collection occur?

Large Item Collection occurs twice a year, in the Spring and the Fall, on your regular collection day.  Check your collection schedule for dates.

Items are to be placed curbside no earlier than the Sunday prior to your regular collection day and no later than 5:00 a.m. on the day of collection. Do not continuously add items during the week.

I own a business and receive curbside collection, can I set out items for Large Item Collection?

No. Large Item Collection is for residential properties only.

Will my Large Item Collection material get collected over several days?

No. Everything will be collected in ‘one day’, on your regular collection day by four (4) separate collection crews, as follows:

  1. Scrap Metal & Non-Freon Metal Appliances
  2. Freon Appliances
  3. Acceptable Large Items
  4. Electronic Waste

If it was not collected, it must be removed from the curbside immediately. Check your collection schedule for your Large Item Collection Day.

When can my items be placed at the curbside?

Items are to be placed curbside no earlier than the Sunday prior to regular collection day and no later than 5:00 a.m. on the day of your collection.

Does it have to be set out in a certain way to be collected?

Yes. Large Item Collection material should be kept separate from your regular streams set out for collection, and your Large Item Collection material must be sorted into four (4) separate piles, as follows:

  1. Scrap metal & non-Freon metal appliances (i.e., Scrap Metal - BBQ’s, stainless steel sinks, bikes, exercise equipment, microwave ovens, stoves, etc. and Non-Freon Metal Appliance – washer, dryer, dishwasher)
  2. Freon appliances (i.e., fridges, freezers, air conditioners, water coolers, dehumidifiers)
  3. Acceptable large items (i.e., furniture, box springs & mattresses, carpets & underlay, pool covers, luggage & hockey bags larger than 9” x 14” x 22”, mops, brooms, shovels & rakes, large bulky household plastic items such as children’s swimming pools, lawn chairs & large outdoor toys)
  4. Electronic waste (i.e., TV’s, computers, radios, speakers)

If possible, it would also assist collection if Large Item Collection material could be set out at one side of your driveway, and your regular waste streams on the other side of your driveway.

Can scrap metal or white goods set out for Large Item Collection be removed by someone other than the Township’s collection contractor?

No. Under the Township’s Waste Management By-law 2023-11-060, no person can scavenge, pick over, interfere with, disturb, remove, or scatter any scrap metal or white goods material set out for Large Item Collection.

The Township has authorization under The Provincial Offences Act to lay charges regarding this by-law when non-compliance becomes a concern. The set fine for such a charge is set at $500.00.

Are there weight or size restrictions for Large Item Collection material?

Yes. Material must be manageable by two (2) people and cannot exceed:

  • 36kg (80 lbs)
  • a volume of 0.76m3 (27ft3)
  • any dimension greater than 1.3m (6ft.)
  • Small items (items smaller than 9” x 14” x 22” or items that can fit into a standard garbage bag or can) will not be collected and should be placed out for regular garbage collection.

Acceptable Large Items are typically items that would not fit in a garbage bag.

Exceptions:

  1. Small metal appliances (iron, kettle, mixer, electric frying pan, coffee pot) may fit in a garbage bag, but are recyclable, and should be placed in your yellow container (with cords removed and disposed of in garbage).
  2. Electronic waste may fit in a garbage bag, but it cannot be set out in the garbage. It is accepted curbside during large item collection or can be brought to an Environmental Day event for disposal.  Check your collection schedule for Environmental Day events.
  3. Hazardous or special waste (HSW) may fit in a garbage bag, but these materials must not go in your regular garbage and are never collected curbside.  HSW material is accepted year-round at the OVWRC free of charge. If set out for Large Item Collection these items will not be collected.
  4. Construction and renovation material also may fit in a garbage bag, but these materials cannot go in your regular garbage and are never collected curbside. Construction and renovation material must be brought to the OVWRC (tipping fees may apply). If set out for Large Item Collection these materials will not be collected.
Can I set out extra bagged garbage for Large Item Collection?

No. Extra garbage (in bags, cardboard boxes, and/or rigid, reusable containers (i.e., garbage cans) will not be collected for Large Item Collection.

Can I set out small items, loose or in a garbage container/cardboard box, for Large Item Collection?

No. Small items (items smaller than 9” x 14” x 22”) placed out in bags, cardboard boxes, and/or rigid, reusable containers (i.e., garbage cans) or set out loose, will not be collected for Large Item Collection.

Why did all my items not get collected?

  • If your item was set out late, after 5:00 a.m. on the day of your collection, it would not be collected.
  • If your item was a non-acceptable item, it would be tagged and not collected. Large Item Collection is for large household items: furniture, mattresses, carpets, large bulky household plastic (i.e., children’s swimming pool), large appliances and scrap metal and electronic waste (computers, TV’s, stereos).  Please refer to your collection schedule for a complete list of acceptable items.
  • If your item exceeded the size or weight restriction, it would be tagged and not collected. Material must be manageable by two (2) people and cannot exceed:
    • 36kg (80 lbs)
    • a volume of 0.76m3 (27ft3)
    • any dimension greater than 1.3m (6ft.)
  • If your item was a small item (items smaller than 9” x 14” x 22” or items that can fit into a standard garbage bag or can) it should have been placed in your regular garbage, it would be tagged, and not collected, i.e.  Typically, if it fits in a garbage bag, it is not an acceptable item for Large Item Collection (This does not apply to hazardous or special waste or construction or renovation material, which are never collected curbside).
  • If your item was hazardous or special waste (i.e., paints, propane cylinders, fluorescent light bulbs) or construction or renovation material (i.e., toilets, vanities, cupboard, concrete, drywall, flooring, vinyl siding and shingles, windows & doors, or wood, it would be tagged and not collected. These materials are never collected curbside.
  • If your material was not sorted into 4 piles: (1) scrap metal & non-Freon metal appliances, (2) Freon appliances, (3) acceptable large items, and (4) electronic waste, it would be tagged and not collected.
What do I do with my items that were left at the curbside?

  • Any items that were left at the curbside after collection must be removed from the curbside immediately.
  • Hazardous or Special Waste (i.e., paints, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, propane cylinders) is never collected curbside.  It is accepted year-round at the OVWRC or at an Environmental Day event.  Please check your collection calendar for dates.
  • Construction/renovation material is never collected curbside and must be brought to the OVWRC for disposal (tipping fees may apply).
